Zhang Xu Zhan
Zhang Xu Zhan specializes in crafting paper effigies, from opulent mansions and oversized paper dolls to paper-adorned mythological creatures and flowers. The artist also demonstrates proficiency in employing various media, including drawing, stop-motion paper dolls, and multi-channel video installations, to create animations, videos, experimental films, and extended imagery.
Biography of Zhang Xu Zhan
Zhang Xu Zhan was born in 1988 in Taipei, Taiwan. In 2010, he achived a Master of New Media Arts from Taipei National University of the Arts.
Zhang Xu Zhan made history as the first Taiwanese artist to receive the prestigious Deutsche Bank Artist of the Year award in 2020. His latest creation, "Compound Eyes of Tropical," won the award for Best Animated Short Film at the 59th Golden Horse Awards in 2022.
His notable solo exhibitions include "Compound Eyes of Tropical- ZHANG XU Zhan Solo Exhibition" at Taipei Fine Art Museum (2022), "Si So Mi - ZHANG XU Zhan Solo Exhibition" at Project Fulfill Art Space (2017), "Inferiority Bat" at Taipei Digital Art Center (2015), and "Ritual of Cathode Ray Tube" at the Taiwan National Museum of Fine Arts (2012).
Zhang Xu Zhan has also participated in numerous group shows, including the 2020 Taiwan Biennial, Yokohama Triennale 2020, The 55th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (2018), The 12th Shanghai Biennale (2018), Taiwan Annual (2016), and Art Basel Hong Kong (2016).
The artists also participated in residencies, including Rooftop Institute, Hong Kong (2018) and Galerilorong, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2019).
Zhang Xu Zhan's artworks are part of numerous public collections, including those of Deutsche Bank in Germany, M+ Museum in Hong Kong, the Permanent Collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Ministry of Culture Art Bank in Taiwan, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul.
