Allora & Calzadilla
Allora & Calzadilla is a collaborative duo of visual artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. Through a multifaceted, research-driven approach, they explore the intersections of history, ecology, and geopolitics, employing a diverse range of artistic mediums such as performance, sculpture, sound, video, photography, and painting.
Their active involvement with art history reflects a keen focus on both conceptual and material aspects, blending metaphorical and factual elements seamlessly.
Biography of Allora & Calzadilla
Jennifer Allora was born in 1974 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned a BA from the University of Richmond in Virginia in 1996. Between 1998 and 1999, she served as a fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. In 2003, she completed her Master of Science degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Guillermo Calzadilla was born in 1971 in Havana, Cuba. He earned a BFA from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1996. In 1998, he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Calzadilla obtained an MFA from Bard College in 2001.
Allora & Calzadilla started their collaboration after crossing paths during their studies abroad in 1995. The duo were finalists for both the Hugo Boss Prize (2006) and the Nam June Paik Award (2006).
Their recent exhibitions include "Entelechy" at Serralves in Porto (2023), "Antille" at Galerie Chantal Crousel in Paris (2022), "Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on Ode to Joy for a Prepared Piano" at Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin (2022), "Allora & Calzadilla | The Great Silence" at Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro (2022), and many more.
