Tom Burr
Tom Burr is a contemporary American conceptual artist known for his sculptures, installations, and mixed media works that explore themes of history, sexuality and architecture. Born in 1963 in New Haven, Connecticut, Burr received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and attended Whitney Independent Study Program.
Through his work, Burr questions how societal structures and physical spaces can shape and limit individual identity, particularly sexual identity. He combines elements of minimalism and post-minimalism, such as geometric forms, industrial materials, and a focus on process, with pop iconography, underground aesthetics, and references to homosexual culture.
His silo exhibitions include Fondazione Converso (Milan, Italy), Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (Hartford, USA), SCAD Museum of Art (Savannah, USA), Bortolami Gallery’s (New York, USA), and Galerie Neu (Berlin, Germany), among others.
