Sigrid Viir
Sigrid Viir's journey in the art world commenced with a strong educational foundation. She initially studied cultural theory at the Estonian Humanitarian Institute before delving into her passion for photography. She received her Bachelor of Arts in 2009 and later, in 2017, earned a Master of Arts in Photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Along her academic path, she also had the opportunity to participate in a Media Arts exchange program at Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, guided by Prof. Elger Esser.
Sigrid Viir's recent exhibitions serve as a testament to her thought-provoking and contemplative approach to art. Her recent shows include "In front of the mirror, on a day full of enthusiasm, you put your mask on too heavily, it bites your skin," with Cloe Jancis, at Temnikova & Kasela in Tallinn (2021); "False Vacationer" at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia in Tallinn (2019); "Awful Pretty Pipe Neck" at Draakon Gallery in Tallinn (2016), and many more.
Sigrid Viir's Art Style
Viir's artistic endeavors, whether undertaken individually or in collaboration with Karel Koplimets and Taaniel Raudsepp as part of Visible Solutions LCC, exist at the intersection of photography, installation, and performance disciplines. Through their collaborative efforts, Visible Solutions delve into the intersection of art and the economy, questioning the methods by which the art world operates and their roles within it.
In her solo practice, Sigrid Viir's focus shifts to a more private sphere, where she examines family dynamics and domestic objects. She holds a keen interest in the subtleties of "behavioral habits and functioning models," which she captures, questions, and rearranges in her work. Her photo series often depict people and objects in unexpected arrangements, encouraging viewers to contemplate the functionality and structure of social models.
