Ong Pei Yee's Art Style
Pei Yee's artistic expression transcends mere visual representation, aiming to evoke emotions and sensations within the viewer. By choosing objects from everyday life and religious artifacts as her subjects, she leads viewers on a reflective journey reminiscent of the intricate nature of memories, as seen in "Kakak Ashi" (2023) or "Green Big Car" (2023).
Her paintings serve as reminders of departed loved ones, encapsulating the essence of fleeting moments and personal connections. Through distortion and personalization, Pei Yee's art imitates the fragmented nature of memories, highlighting their profound impact on shaping individual identities.
In her recent series exhibited at "Two Tales" in collaboration with emerged artist Hana Tan at Rissim Contemporary, Pei Yee delves into the realm of childhood memories. Transitioning into a new phase of life, she meditates on the simplicity and joy of childhood games, seeking to capture the essence of innocence and wonder. Through close-ups of hands, feet, and isolated chairs against vague backdrops, she explores themes of nostalgia and resilience, inviting viewers to reflect on their journeys of self-discovery and growth.
