Oliver Bak

Oliver Bak, a Danish artist born in 1992, currently resides and works in Paris. In his paintings, Bak incorporates art historical references and creates a temporal complexity that bridges the past and the present. He uses substantial chromatic backgrounds that transition into ambiguous landscapes, populated by human figures, animals, and natural objects. The interplay between the characters and their environment is deliberately blurred, weaving together a symbolic gesture that alludes to the social and psychological contradictions of the characters. Bak's material processes and layers create their reality, and narratives unfold freely, disconnected from a romanticized past. His motifs suggest a muted emotional expression, seeking a balance where the figures emerge from and blend into their surroundings. His recent solo exhibition, Sick with Bloom, was held at ADZ in Lisbon in 2022.
