Matias Armendaris
Matias Armendaris is an Ecuadorian artist currently based in Mexico City, and is a member of the collaborative artist duo ASMA. He holds an MFA in the Painting and Drawing Department from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and graduated with a BFA in drawing and printmaking from Emily Carr University in 2015. Armendaris has exhibited his work in solo and group shows internationally in Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Slovenia, Argentina, and the United States.
Armendaris' artistic practice incorporates sculpture, drawing, printmaking, writing, and installation to explore the concept of belonging and plural identity. He is interested in creating an affective space for multiple identities to coexist. His work focuses on object-human relationships and he aims to activate poetic readings of multiple possible futures. Armendaris' objects resemble artifacts of anthropology, archeology, and geology, as well as fantastical and magical relics. His work engages with the viewer in a way that encourages them to question the relationship between the past, present, and future.
