Masaya Chiba

Masaya Chiba, a Japanese artist born in Kanagawa in 1980, currently resides in Tokyo. Chiba's paintings are created through a process of actively engaging with the objects of his choice and extracting images from his surroundings and previous life events, reconstructing them on canvas with his handmade motifs. Chiba's paintings combine pseudo-reality, pure artificiality and reality, establishing a complex world with different textures. His preferred medium is painting, and he boldly disturbs the existing structure of contemporary art. Chiba's exhibitions include "Masaya Chiba Exhibition" (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo, 2021), "Painting and …" (Gallery αM, Tokyo, 2018), and "Discordant Harmony" (Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima, 2015). In 2019, Chiba visited Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, and Italy for research supported by AIT and the Backers Foundation.
