Biography of Joy Gerrard
Joy Gerrard was born in 1971 in Dublin, Ireland. She earned a BA in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and completed both an MA and MPhil at the Royal College of Art, London.
In 2020, Gerrard served as the artist in residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, and she has been selected as a Golden Foundation Artist in Residence in New York for 2023.
She has exhibited her art widely. Recent shows include "Image as Protest: Joy Gerrard & Paula Rego" at Cristea Roberts Gallery in London (2023), "192nd RHA Annual Exhibition" at Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin (2022), "Páipéar" at Hang Tough Contemporary in Dublin (2022), "Collage: A Political Act" at Ulster Museum in Belfast (2022), and "New Acquisitions" at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in Bristol (2022).
Additionally, Joy Gerrard's works have been featured in shows at various galleries and museums worldwide, including Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda, Thread Gallery in Belfast, Drawing Room in London, Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in China, Jyväskylä Art Museum in Jyväskylä, Judith Wall Gallery in New York, among other esteemed venues.
Currently, the artist lives and works in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Joy Gerrard's Art Style
Gerrard creates Japanese ink drawings and paintings that explore the intricate physical and psychological interactions between people and architecture. She meticulously archives and recreates images of political demonstrations worldwide, spanning movements such as Trump Resistance, the Occupy movement, Arab Risings, BLM, the Women’s March, and others.
