José Manuel Mesías

Born in 1990 in Havana, Cuba, José Manuel Mesías is an artist who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro in 2009. He has exhibited his work in solo shows throughout Cuba, as well as in group exhibitions across the US, Europe, and South America. Additionally, he participated in a Cuba-UK exchange program in London and currently works as an assistant professor at San Alejandro.

Mesías finds inspiration from his environment, drawing from both the concept and materials of his surroundings. His art delves deeply into the history and cultural evolution of Cuba. Mesías deconstructs pivotal moments in Cuban history and reinterprets them to reflect contemporary events, using a variety of mediums. His work showcases expressionistic portraits, large-format paintings, and small creations that contain rich textures and a poetic and spontaneous atmosphere. His pieces convey the beauty and decay of urban settings, while also conveying the anxiety and wonder that the world evokes.
