Jos de Gruyter

Jos de Gruyter was born in 1965 in Kortrijk, Belgium, and currently lives and works in Brussels. He is a multimedia artist who works with various media, including video, sculpture, installation, and drawing. De Gruyter's work explores themes such as cultural identity, power dynamics, and social conformity, often using non-professional actors, objects, and dolls to create surreal and unsettling scenarios. In collaboration with Harald Thys, de Gruyter represented Belgium at the 2019 Venice Biennale, where they transformed the Belgian Pavilion into a bizarre folklore museum displaying the human figure.
