Jindřich Štyrský

Jindřich Štyrský (1899-1942) was a Czech painter, poet, photographer, and co-founder of the Czech Surrealist movement. Born in the Czech Republic, Štyrský studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he was introduced to Surrealism and Dadaism.

In the 1920s, Štyrský became one of the leading figures of the Czech avant-garde, along with his friend, poet and playwright Vítězslav Nezval. Together, they co-founded the Czech Surrealist Group in 1934, and published the journal "Surrealismus" (Surrealism) to promote their ideas.

Štyrský's art often incorporated elements of the fantastic and the dreamlike, drawing on his interest in Surrealist and Symbolist literature. He worked in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, and collage. His photography, in particular, was highly experimental, and he was known for his use of photomontage and collage techniques.
