Raoul Ubac
Raoul Ubac (1910-1985) was a Belgian-born photographer, sculptor, and painter who spent much of his life in France. He was associated with the Surrealist movement and was known for his innovative photographic techniques, including multiple exposures and photograms.
Ubac was born in Malmedy, Belgium, and studied engineering before turning to art. He moved to Paris in 1930 and became involved with the Surrealist group, which included artists such as Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. Ubac began experimenting with photography in the 1930s, and his work was included in the first Surrealist photography exhibition in Paris in 1936.
In the 1940s, Ubac began to explore sculpture and painting as well, creating abstract works that often incorporated natural forms such as rocks and branches. He continued to work in photography as well, developing new techniques such as solarization, which involved exposing the photographic print to light during the development process.
