James Nares
James Nares (b. 1953) is a British-born artist who has been living and working in New York City since the 1970s. He is known for his abstract and experimental paintings, films, and videos.
Nares' early work was influenced by the punk and new wave music scenes in New York, and he was a founding member of the influential no wave band, The Contortions. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Nares turned his attention to painting, and his work often incorporates unconventional materials and techniques, such as his use of a car to create large-scale paintings by dragging a paint-soaked canvas behind it.
In recent years, Nares has also gained recognition for his films and videos, which often feature slow-motion footage of everyday objects and actions. These works explore the textures, rhythms, and patterns of the world around us, and they blur the lines between painting, photography, and film.
Nares' work is held in many major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
