Herbert List

Herbert List was a German photographer known for his surrealistic and poetic images of classical sculptures, landscapes, and the human form. List was born in Hamburg, Germany and studied photography in Munich, where he became associated with the artistic circle that included the painters Max Ernst and Salvador Dali.

List's work often featured the human body as a sculptural form, often in unexpected and abstracted ways. He frequently incorporated classical sculptures into his photographs, juxtaposing them with modern objects and settings. List was also known for his use of light and shadow, which added an otherworldly quality to his images.

During World War II, List moved to the United States, where he worked as a photographer for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Life. He returned to Europe in the 1950s and continued to work as a photographer until his death in 1975.
