About the Artwork

Gyoko Yoshida

Yoshida was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1970 and completed the MFA program at Tama Art University in 1996. She is currently based in Kanazawa, Japan and is known for her consistent exploration of the theme of 'Japanese painting'. Over the past decade, Yoshida has developed a method of composition that reflects ancient Japanese techniques, featuring an integral space lacking a central point where various parts remain independent. This method is recognizable in the traditional painting styles of the Rimpa and Kano schools. Yoshida's work questions and reevaluates the development of Japanese contemporary art under Western influence, seeking to revive original production techniques.

Yoshida uses a mix of visual illusions from past and present Japanese art, and employs various mediums including performance and installation to create her 'paintings'. Her use of traditional materials such as lacquer, silk gauze, Japanese handmade paper, and pigment, alongside unconventional elements like mirrors and PVC, reflect her fundamental joy in the act of looking, feeling, and thinking.
