Eugène Carrière
Eugène Carrière was a French Symbolist painter known for his intimate and contemplative portraits and scenes of everyday life. He was born in Gournay-sur-Marne, France, and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Carrière's paintings often featured ethereal, dreamlike figures set against dark, somber backgrounds, with a focus on subtle tonal variations and soft, hazy edges. He was particularly interested in the interplay of light and shadow, and his works often explore the interior psychological states of his subjects. Carrière was also known for his use of pastels, and his drawings and prints were highly regarded. He was a close friend of fellow Symbolist painters such as Gustave Moreau and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and he exhibited his works at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne.
