Biography of Anita Magsaysay-Ho

Anita Magsaysay-Ho was born in 1914 in Manila, Philippines. At the age of thirteen, she enrolled at the School of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines (UP) and received guidance from renowned Filipino artists like Fabian de la Rosa, Fernando Amorsolo, and Pablo Amorsolo.

Subsequently, she pursued studies at UP's School of Design under the tutelage of instructors like Victorio Edades and Enrique Ruiz. 

In the 1930s, after completing her education at UP, she embarked on a journey to the United States. There, she attended the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, where she delved into the world of oil painting. During her time in New York City, Magsaysay-Ho further honed her skills by enrolling in drawing courses at the Art Students League.

During her time there, fate introduced her to Robert Ho, a fellow student from Hong Kong studying in New York City. They married in 1947 and relocated to China. In China, Robert Ho established his shipping industry enterprise, Magsaysay Inc. The couple's family expanded to include five children, and due to Robert Ho's professional commitments, they embarked on a journey of frequent relocations, including Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, New York, Washington, D.C., and Japan, among other places.

In 1958, a panel of experts convened by the Manila Chronicle reached a unanimous consensus, acknowledging Magsaysay-Ho as a preeminent figure destined to etch her name into the annals of Philippine art history. Shortly thereafter, she earned her place among the 'Thirteen Moderns,' a select group of Filipino modernist artists. Remarkably, she was the sole female member of this esteemed group.

Tragically, her journey came to a close in 2012 in her birthplace of Manila, Philippines. Throughout her life, Magsaysay-Ho remained dedicated to her craft, leaving behind a body of work that testifies to her artistic prowess and her commitment to capturing the beauty of everyday life.
