Eko Nugroho was born in 1977 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. From 1993 to 1997, he studied at the High School for Fine Arts (SMSR) in Yogyakarta. He furthered his education by attending the Painting Department at the Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta from 1997 to 2006. 

Nugroho's solo exhibitions have been showcased globally, including notable venues such as Asia Society in New York, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
