CATPC
The Congolese Plantation Workers Art League (CATPC, acronym of the French ‘Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise’), is a cooperative of plantation workers based in Lusanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. Founded in 2014, the organization is a grassroots platform for the development of new economic initiatives based on the production and sale of critical art. Through the launch of a creative economy, it aims to improve the economic position of its members and their communities. With the profits from their art, CATPC buys back exhausted plantation land and turns it into ecological food forests.
On June 14, 2022, at Art Basel, CATPC launched the Balot NFT. With the Balot NFT, CATPC reclaims the powers of a long-lost sculpture held by a major US museum to reintroduce sustainability and cultural life on a plantation in Congo. This radical new model turns the NFT into a tool for decolonization.
