O Grivo
Nelson Soares and Marcos Moreira form the artistic duo known as O Grivo (created in 1990).
O Grivo's Art Style
With its lively and seemingly precarious contraptions, O Grivo stands among a distinguished cohort of Brazilian audiovisual artists, akin to the Chelpa Ferro collective or Paulo Nenflidio. They are deeply entrenched within the visual arts landscape, and renowned for their utilization of unexpected apparatuses in their creations.
In contrast to the aforementioned artists, O Grivo's work, influenced in part by the musical expertise of its members, places a distinct emphasis on sonority. While visual impact remains significant, imagery emerges as a consequence of their exploration of the musical dimension. Their crafted soundscapes pave the way for a novel auditory experience, intertwining with a fresh perspective on visualizing sound-producing mechanisms.
Initially gaining recognition for their musical collaborations with artists like Cao Guimarães, Lucas Bambozzi, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Valeska Soares, among others, the collective's installations soon captivated audiences with their compelling visual allure. This shift in focus led to O Grivo being acknowledged not just for their sound compositions but also for the visual richness of their creations, particularly highlighted following their exhibition "Antarctica artes com a folha" in 1996.
Exhibitions of O Grivo's Art
The collective has exhibited their work extensively both in Brazil and internationally. They were showcased at the 28th São Paulo Biennial in Brazil (2008) and the 8th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre, Brazil (2008).
Notable solo shows include "Apresentação especial de O Grivo" presented in Pedro Motta – Estado da natureza, Teatro do SESI-SP in São Paulo (2019), "O Grivo – Improviso" at Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) in Rio de Janeiro (2018), "Puzzling Is Not a Solitary Game" at Triple Canopy in New York (2017), "Objetos de medida" at Sesc Jundiaí in São Paulo (2017). and many more.
