Miquel Barceló
For Spanish artist Miquel Barceló, the ocean, a reminder of his homeland, recurs as a theme imbued with emotion evident in the colors and angles he employs. His practice spans various styles and mediums, driven by the effects of time and resulting metamorphosis. After being the second most-sold painter at the 1987 Spanish Contemporary Art Fair, it's no wonder that Barceló is regarded as one of the most significant figures in Spanish contemporary art.
Biography of Miquel Barceló
Miquel Barceló's longing for the sea is unsurprising, given his birth in 1957 in Felanitx, Majorca, where the expansive sight of salty waters reaching the horizon was a constant in his youth. Moving between art schools in Majorca and Barcelona during the 1970s, Barceló's residencies shifted, with a return to Majorca in 1974 to join the protests of the group Taller Lunatic.
Barceló's pivotal moment came in 1982 when he represented Spanish painting in Dokumenta de Kasel, organized by Rudi Fuchs, who selected Barceló for this role. As his career as an artist flourished, he found himself exploring more of the land and less of the sea.
Throughout the 1980s, Miquel Barceló embarked on numerous voyages across Europe, America, and Africa, profoundly influencing his art. His style during this period mirrored his travels — diverse and exploratory, encompassing paintings, drawings, sculptures, and more.
Even then, the recurring motif of the sea persisted in Barceló's works, albeit portrayed through varied techniques and materials. Barceló's practice continually evolved, exploring themes of time and metamorphosis, with his work reflecting these effects. At one juncture, the narrative of the sea transitioned to the Sahara desert after his travels to Mali in Africa. Developing a style that utilizes local materials on paper, his art continues depicting ever-changing forms of familiar subjects.
In 2004, Barceló made history as the youngest living contemporary artist to exhibit at the Louvre, showcasing his interpretation of Dante's "Divine Comedy."
Miguel Barceló resides and works in Paris, Majorca, and Mali.
