MARYAN
Pinchas Burstein (1927-1977) was a Polish-born Jewish post-expressionist painter who later changed his name to Maryan S. Maryan. He was born in Nowy Sącz, Poland and survived the Holocaust, spending time in concentration camps during World War II. After the war, Maryan studied art in France, where he developed a style that combined elements of Expressionism and Surrealism.
Maryan's work was marked by its emotional intensity and its exploration of themes related to trauma, violence, and the human condition. He often depicted distorted, fragmented figures that conveyed a sense of inner turmoil and psychological pain. Maryan's paintings were exhibited in many prestigious galleries and museums during his lifetime, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
