Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker, and one of the founding members of the group Die Brücke ("The Bridge"), a movement that emerged in Germany in the early 20th century.
Schmidt-Rottluff's art is characterized by bold colors, simplified forms, and a direct and expressive style. His early work was influenced by the art of Vincent van Gogh and the Fauvists, but he later developed his own distinctive style that incorporated elements of primitivism and folk art.
In addition to painting, Schmidt-Rottluff was also a prolific printmaker, producing woodcuts and lithographs that often featured stark, graphic images. He was also a committed teacher and served as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin for many years.
