Julião Sarmento
Julião Sarmento was a Portuguese contemporary artist known for his paintings, sculptures, and installations that explore themes of identity, desire, and power. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Sarmento studied painting and printmaking at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He exhibited his work in galleries and museums throughout Europe and the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
Sarmento's art often featured fragmented figures and suggestive images, inviting viewers to consider the complexities of human experience.
He was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Biennale. Sarmento passed away in May 2021.
