Judith Linhares

Judith Linhares is an American figurative painter known for her bold and colorful works that often depict female figures in dreamlike or mythological settings. She was born in 1940 in California and received her MFA from the California College of the Arts in 1973. Linhares' paintings often combine elements of the surreal and the fantastical, featuring strange and otherworldly landscapes inhabited by powerful and enigmatic female figures. Her work is characterized by her use of bold, vibrant colors and her loose, gestural brushwork, which gives her paintings a sense of spontaneity and energy. Linhares' work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe, and is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Brooklyn Museum, among others. In addition to her painting practice, Linhares is also an influential teacher and mentor, having taught at a number of institutions throughout her career, including the New York Studio School and the University of California, Berkeley.
