Biography of Jim Hodges
Jim Hodges was born in 1957 in Spokane, Washington. In 1980, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Fort Wright College in Spokane.
Later, in 1986, the artist obtained an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. During that year, he encountered art collector Elaine Dannheisser, who granted him access to a studio in the basement of her foundation on Duane Street. In return, he worked part-time as an art handler.
During this period, he shifted away from his initial medium of painting and delved into the exploration of materiality. After residing in Dannheisser's basement for around four years, his artistic output declined. Devoting only three days a week to his craft, he eventually faced financial instability and lived in his studio unlawfully until Dannheisser evicted him. However, following his sobriety, his career experienced a resurgence with a piece titled "Flesh Suspense" (1989–1990).
From the late 1980s onward, Hodges produced various works delving into themes of fragility, temporality, love, and death. In the late 1990s, artists responded to the AIDS epidemic through various forms of expression, encompassing the written word and abstract artistic statements that conveyed emotions from anger to elegy.
His recent solo exhibitions include "Jim Hodges" at MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique in Paris (2023), "Jim Hodges: Craig's Closet" at New York City AIDS Memorial Park (2023), "Location Proximity" at Gladstone 64 in New York (2022), "Impossible Flower" at Baldwin Gallery in Aspen (2022), and many more.
Jim Hodges has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including "Water Ways" at Ruby City in San Antonio (2023), "A Mind of Winter" at Gladstone Gallery in New York (2023), "Together" at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock (2023), "This and This" at CRG Gallery in New York (2022), among others.
Currently, the artist lives and works between Milan and New York.
