Biography of Geraldine Javier
Geraldine Javier was born in 1970 in Makati City, Philippines. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Javier did not initially pursue a career in the arts; she first trained as a nurse before transitioning to the field of art. When she eventually began her art education with a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP) College of Fine Arts, she was significantly influenced by Roberto Chabet.
She gained prominence in 2003 when she was honored with the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Since then, she has exhibited her works widely both in the Philippines and internationally.
Geraldine Javier's works frequently explore themes of nature and natural history. Her pieces are often created in layers and incorporate dioramic vitrines alongside painting. A notable example is her 2010 multi-part piece dedicated to Frida Kahlo, titled "Ella Amo’Apasionadamente Y Fue Correspondida" ("For she loved fiercely, and she is well-loved"). This work comprises a large canvas painting adorned with framed mounted butterflies.
Her notable solo exhibitions include "Fearing, Doubting, Wondering, Hoping, Dreaming" at Arario Gallery in Shanghai (2018), "Beginnings and Endings" at the West Gallery in Quezon City (2017), "Red Fights Back” at Silverlens Gallery in Makati (2012), and many more.
Additionally, Javier's works have been featured in numerous group shows held at various galleries and museums worldwide, including Ormond Hall in Melbourne, MO Space in Taguig, Silverlens Gallery in Makati, Valentine Willie Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur, among others.
