Gary Hume
Gary Hume is a British contemporary artist known for his use of bold color and simple, graphic forms. He was born in 1962 in Kent, England, and studied at Goldsmiths College in London in the late 1980s, where he became associated with the Young British Artists movement.
Hume's paintings often feature flat, highly-saturated colors, and are characterized by their simplicity and economy of form. He has exhibited extensively throughout the world, with major shows at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Venice Biennale.
In 1996, Hume was shortlisted for the Turner Prize, and he was awarded the Jerwood Painting Prize in 1997. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2001, and was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2020 for his services to art. Hume currently lives and works in London.
