Arnaldo Pomodoro
Pomodoro Arnaldo is an Italian sculptor and artist, born in the town of Morciano di Romagna in 1926. He began his artistic studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Urbino, Italy, before moving to Milan in 1954 where he worked as a goldsmith.
Pomodoro's artistic practice was deeply influenced by the ideas and principles of the Italian avant-garde movement. His early works consisted of abstract paintings and sculptures, which reflected his interest in geometry, texture, and materiality. In the 1960s, he began to produce large-scale public sculptures, which became some of his most famous and enduring works.
One of Pomodoro's most iconic sculptures is the "Sphere within a Sphere" (Sfera con Sfera), a large bronze globe with a cracked outer surface that reveals a second, smaller sphere within. This sculpture has been installed in public spaces around the world, including in the Vatican, the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C.
