Alex Katz initially created cut-outs for the set design of an Off-Broadway production, aiming to extend the figure's energy beyond its sharp contours, mirroring the way human energy extends beyond immediate presence.
Since then, he has explored cut-outs and quick paintings, resulting in a remarkably complete and smooth surface featuring what the artist terms "prosaic imagery" of leaves and faces. His objective is to imprint lasting images in a person's mind. Despite often incorporating landscape imagery, Katz characterizes his creations as highly aggressive due to their imposing presence.
Alex Katz, an acclaimed American painter, sculptor, and printmaker is renowned for his figurative paintings. His art is distinguished by a distinctive, flattened style with vibrant colors, developed in response to the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s. While acknowledged as a precursor to the Pop Art movement, Katz has deliberately steered clear of aligning himself with any singular style or movement throughout his career.
